Spare parts inventory optimisation is vital for high rail fleet operational availability
The two biggest challenges facing the rail industry in 2013 and beyond are the need to improve frequency and maximise operational effectiveness. All rail organisations require their fleets to perform with maximal efficiency, while minimising operating costs.
When a train breaks down, support is urgently needed to get the vehicle back in operation immediately which makes availability of spare parts absolutely vital. However, holding spare parts means capital tied up in stock combined with the risk of not having the right parts available in the right location. The Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) and spare parts inventories are fundamentally different to other inventory types. This means that many of the standard supply chain and inventory management tools and techniques just do not apply.
